Practicing the Basics As a fledgling singer, I wanted to be better. I hired a coach to work with me. He was making me sing the scales, you know - la, la, la, la, la, la, la - in intervals. But it was dreary work! I stifled a yawn. I didn't think he noticed me rolling my eyes. I was going through the paces, eager to get through it - to get to the good part. Suddenly, he said, "Chris, it looks like you're bored with this part." I said something intellectual, like, "Duh!" Then he zinged me: "You know the basics. Why don't you do them right and we'll move on?" Ouch. "Look," he softened, "the exercises are easy because doing them consistently isn't." I guess I needed to hear that. It made me think. Every good singer I can think of practices the basics. Pavarotti had a coach. Great musicians work on the basics. So do great athletes. Great business professionals practice basic skills, too - communication, understanding personalities, motivation, supervision, conflict resolution, teamwork, sales and service. All those "la, la, la" things that we know, but don't always practice consistently. Learning those basic skills is easy. Keeping the fresh is crucial. You don't have time to stop and think about them when you are flying by the seat of your pants.
