Clearing the Clouds from Your Communication Every day is full of misunderstandings, which you could avoid. “That’s not what I said!” “I meant to say…” “Where did you get that idea?” As a manager, you get things done through other people. You must be a good communicator to be effective in your job. If not, it influences your ability to get your job done. But, you know that simply saying what you mean doesn’t always work. Here is the problem: you try to explain something as clearly as possible. Somehow, it is misunderstood. You repeat it again with no luck. The definition of insanity, as noted by writer Rita Mae Brown, is “doing the same things over and over and expecting different results.” The emotional side of communication can cloud your intent and meaning. Your words project through your emotional filters before even leaving your mouth. Then, the receiver also filters what he or she hears as it comes in. Communication is not a one-size-fits-all process. You need to flex your communication style to meet the individual needs of each receiver. Simply take into account his or her personality and preference. Find out how he or she needs to take in information. At the very least - try saying it differently!
