On the Fly Article Archives
How to Compound Employee Interest My clients frequently ask how to get their employees more interested in the jobs that they do. They tell me that apathy has run rampant in their organizational climates. On the flip side, one of the three most motivating aspects of an employee's performance is "interesting work." My clients want to know how to make some of the repetitive jobs more interesting. Interest is the common denominator. To get it you have to have it. You have to show it. Do your employees feel like you are interested in them? Do they feel like you know their interests? Many employers focus entirely on the skills and experience of their workers. Try finding out about the interests of your employees, and use that information when you hand out special assignments. I use a great tool that identifies both - employee experience and interest. Hold frequent discussions with your people about the importance of the job they do. Make sure they understand the way it fits into the big picture, especially if the job is repetitive or entry level. Invest in their ongoing training and development. We sincerely need these people - they need to hear that from us on a regular basis. This two-sided principle will compound your employee interest!
