On the Fly Article Archives
Enjoying the Flight Remember the good old days? Won't it be nice when we get back to normal? When will things finally settle down? I've heard it all, lately, so I began to reNvision those phrases. What does it take to make us jolly or happy - something internal or external? Are we really so dependent on nifty presents, a big house and paid-off VISA's to make us smile? The reverse is true for stressing out. Do other people and circumstances make us feel bad, or get mad? Are we indeed only hapless victims of our own emotions? We tend to judge how other people and current affairs 'should be' against the ideal we hold, even though we can't ourselves maintain it. We get frustrated when the impossible discrepancies don't align. That's our vision of now, and we seek escape. We glorify our view of yesterday...the good old days. We have the perspective of time and distance to blur the nasty details and compare favorably with the glare of today. We try to avoid our frustration by reliving that perfected past. We dream lofty expectations of the perfect tomorrow, and we yearn for the ability to just get through today. We postpone current enjoyment, hoping that the gamble will pay off big this time. But life is not the destination, it's the flight. The air has updrafts and downdrafts, which are opportunities and shortfalls. All we can do is fly in the moment, and make use of each one. And while we fly, we can marvel at the wonder of it all. The present really is our present this season. Enjoy the flight!
