The Failure/Success Continuum Success and failure are not at opposite ends of the spectrum, they are right next to each other. Somewhere along the path you are on, you might break through to the other side. It's like entering the Twilight Zone - suddenly you're there! The trouble is, you never know exactly where the thin line between success and failure is located. Sometimes you get lucky, and blunder right through it. More often, though, you have to try a lot harder, persist a lot longer and weather many storms before you cross over it. Yet, success might be well within your reach - you might be very close to it when you stop trying to achieve it. You can't see through that line, even when you're right next to it. So, if it matters to you, don't stop! Your persistence will eventually pay off. It is said that Edison tried one thousand times before successfully inventing the light bulb. Did he know it would take that long when he started? I doubt it. The task would have seemed insurmountable if he did. Did he know that after try number 999, the next one would be the one? I doubt that, too. For all he knew, he was only half way there. But he had a vision, he had a passion, and he had persistence. That's what it takes. So, keep trying - for all you know, you're almost there. Chris Waugh owns reNvision, Inc., and works with business professionals who want to learn to succeed on the fly.
