How To Fly By the Competition
By Chris Waugh

Question #1: Our business has been seriously impacted by a bigger corporation that just moved into the territory. How can we compete?

Question #2: Why do some people rise rapidly up the ladder at work, while I don’t? What can I do to get promoted?

Answer to Both: Whether you are piloting your career or your business, you are in control of your flight. You cannot control the environment, however. Think like a hang glider pilot, and learn to identify the opportunities that surround you so that you can take advantage of them.

Certain hang glider pilots always seem to come out on top. It’s easy to assume that they have the best glider, but everyone who flies that glider doesn’t soar. It’s also easy to write them off as ‘lucky.’ Why do they consistently find good lift?

In reality, they have three little secrets – each simple yet complicated. Together, they form a little rhyme:

Be Aware The best pilots take careful inventory of their own motivations, and their own abilities. They know their strengths and weaknesses, and those of the other pilots, the spectators, and even the support team. Most importantly, they know which way the wind blows. They study the weather constantly, and can recognize lift when they sense it. Your environment has opportunities, too, if you learn to see them.

Prepare The winning pilots are ready for any conceivable alternative. They choose the best glider for their goals, and get familiar with the aerodynamic performance of the wing in varying conditions. They learn to read the terrain and predict opportunities. They practice. They grow by pushing the envelope a little each time. They devise a rough flight plan, and perform a preflight inspection of their equipment. Are you fully prepared for your destination?

Dare Finally, the top performers decide when the time is right to launch. They have prepared, and now their awareness borders on intuition. They commit. They go for it. They know you can’t get very high if you don’t let go of what is comfortable.

These flying lessons form a cycle, not a line. Once you dare, you become aware of variations and prepare once again to realign with your goal. Learn to soar – the sky’s the limit.
