People Can't Find Good Jobs
Employers Can't Find Good People

By Chris Waugh

You hear both of these headlines all the time. Can they both be true? Of course not. In fact, they are both wrong. Good people can find good jobs and good employers can find good people. The world of employment, like everything else, is changing. Are you keeping up?

Maybe you already know all the recruitment, resume writing and interview techniques. Is that enough? Are you happy with the results? Whether you are looking for an employer, or you are looking for an employee, it makes sense to 'reNvision' the whole employment process - to look at it from different perspectives.

It is as if you have a lock and you need a key to open it. Many keys will not fit, or if they seem to fit, they do not turn the tumblers. Most locks work. So do most keys. The problem is that not all keys fit all locks. The same is true for finding the perfect employer, or the perfect employee. You need the right key, so pay attention to the right fit.

Let’s change perspective a few more times:

Before choosing the obvious perspective (your own) put yourself in the shoes of the prospective employer or employee. What do you think he/she wants from the employment relationship? What do you think motivates him/her? Are you sure? How do you know? (Mistakes here end up as turnover statistics and unhappy memories.)

What kinds of personalities co-exist in the workplace? What team strengths and weaknesses need to be considered? What can you learn from those answers? Now, choose the perspective of the co-workers. What can you learn from them? OK, now look at your own needs. Project them into the future.

Once you decide that a particular employer or employee is the right fit for you, the sales part of the process begins. Marketing people will tell you that you have to sell the benefits. You have to answer the WIIFM (What’s In It For Me) question. This is true for employment, too. You have to understand the needs to sell the benefits. If you have determined the right fit you will know reasons and they are the benefits.

Take time to change perspectives and view your challenges from various angles. The time and money you save may be your own.
