The Desire to Learn is a Key You’ve seen the Employers of Choice Awards, the 100 Best Companies to Work For, and other such designations. These companies seem to embody their values, treat their people well and invest in employee growth and training. The reward to the business shows up in the bottom line. Many of these companies have in-house Human Resource departments. They provide training in task oriented skills, and in professional development – all at no cost to their employees. Companies that put a premium on learning become learning organizations – better able to challenge the competition. Yet, I am always surprised at the percentage of employees who don’t take advantage of this type of training – communication, conflict resolution, teamwork, goal setting, time management and self-image. So, I talked to a few employers and here is what I found out: The best employees do take advantage of training opportunities. The best employees do want to learn, and grow. The best employees do want to review their professional skills. I draw two conclusions from this information. If, as an employer, you don’t give the opportunity for professional development – you should. I doesn’t cost as much as you might think, because many people won’t take you up on it. Secondly, during your hiring interviews, ask about the applicant’s past opportunities for learning, and ask them how they took advantage of them. Remember, the best employees want to learn.
