Can You Manage Change?
To manage means to take charge, handle, dominate, and control. Manage change? Forget it! Change is like the weather - you don't manage it. As Mark Twain said, "Everybody talks about the weather, but nobody does anything about it." Everybody talks about change too, and just like the weather, nobody does anything. Nobody can. We can't manage our environment, we can only manage ourselves (and that isn't easy.) But look how hard we try! We read books on change management, take classes on change management, and hire change management "experts." There are plenty of consultants on the web who specialize in that topic. Wouldn't it be easier if we stopped trying to control change, but rather learned to adapt to it? What if we were more aware of the changes around us? What if we were prepared for any of the variables? And, best yet, what if we could identify and take advantage of the opportunities? Once you quit thinking of change as something to be controlled, you can learn how to navigate it - like a glider pilot navigates through the air. On the fly, the pilot takes into account the direction and velocity of the wind, feels the turbulence, and adapts to it. Sometimes the glider has to crab, or fly sideways, to maintain a desired heading. You don't change the wind, you change how you fly. There is lift out there in the turbulence, and there are opportunities in change. So, don't try to manage change. Don't try to control it, learn to benefit from it! Get skilled at flying through uncertainty. Be aware. Prepare. And dare. You are flying by the seat of your pants.
