Five Ways to Get More Out of People What makes good employees want to work for us – money? No. The employees grow accustomed to the wages we pay as a fair trade for the work that they do. The motivation of money is fleeting. And as employers, we want more than just the work from our employees. We want their conviction, their passion, their heart, their mind, their creativity and their loyalty. You cannot demand these things in a contract or job description. These are human traits; they are volunteered and we have to earn them. Our job as managers is to get things done through other people. If money isn’t the motivator, how do we gain their conviction, passion, heart, mind, creativity, loyalty, etc? Here are five quick and inexpensive ways: 1. Ask them. Share your management challenges with them; get their advice. How do you think we are doing? How would you run the company differently? How can we work together better? How can we attract the best employees here? Listen to their ideas; better yet, incorporate them 2. Illustrate the company vision to them daily – the mission, the meaning, the goals, the challenges and especially the importance of their job in that big picture. 3. Let them manage their job as much as possible. Give them ownership and the right to be the expert in their area. 4. Discuss and resolve conflicts. Treat problems openly and fairly. Train your people in communication and leadership skills. Grow them as human beings and add value to their career path. 5. Make the job fun. (Even morticians have their sense of humor!) Have contests, challenges, goals with little prizes. Work on building teamwork and camaraderie.
