The Thermals are in the Turbulence Finding opportunities in today's changing business climate reminds me of soaring thermals in my hang glider. I can't "see" the wind - the environment through which I'm flying. But I can feel the effect of it. The air seems smooth at first, but soon I notice pockets of turbulence are everywhere. Some are small and others are bigger. There are gusts, updrafts, downdrafts, rotors, and, in today's case, thermals rising. I recognize the feeling of those bubbles, and I notice cumulus clouds forming high above me. The birds are soaring. Even though it's a struggle to maneuver, I shift my weight and fly my glider directly into a big turbulent thermal. I turn tight circles to stay in it, and I start to rise with it. Within a few minutes, I climb almost two thousand feet. Now, that was a good thermal! I look around. My horizons have expanded. The world is spread out below me. The clouds indicate that there are more thermals forming today - more potential for lift. Although I anticipated a short flight, I quickly change my plan. I take off cross-country. A couple of hours and many thermals later, I've logged thirty miles. Thanks to cellular technology, I speed dial my driver with my new destination. My retrieval vehicle is waiting when I land with cold beverages on the tailgate. Now, that is flying by the seat of your pants - at its best! We have to know how to identify and take advantage of the invisible opportunities that we fly through in our business climate, too. Although we may not literally see them, we need to be aware with all our senses, our intuition and our imagination. If we pick up the signs before the competition, we will be in the best position to soar. We also have to be nimble and confident to change our plan when the situation calls for it. Thermals don't wait for pilots to consider their potential, and business opportunities don't wait for us to deliberate, either. We have to wing it.
