On the Fly Article Archives
Launch Momentum Each hang glider flight has a launch, which is initiated with only a few steps that need to build the wing's momentum from zero to flight speed. By the time you step off the edge of the cliff, you better be flying. As the pilot, you choose your launch site, and you decide when to launch. Your biggest responsibility, though, is to build that all-important momentum. Those initial steps can make the difference between life and death in flying, and success and failure in any endeavor. Remember Newton's first law of motion? "An object at rest tends to stay at rest, and an object in motion tends to stay in motion." It takes a lot of energy to initiate your launch, but then things get easier. It's less work to maintain momentum than it is to start it. Think about the projects in your life and work. Of course, each one you launch needs to be located and timed right. But it is the lack of momentum that stalls many endeavors. So put some energy into it! Chris Waugh owns reNvision, Inc., and works with business professionals who want to learn to succeed on the fly. The author of several books, including 'Flying by the Seat of Your Pants,' she blends years of business management experience with her hang glider's perspective on change.
