Out with the Old & In with the New Let's review, reconsider, revive. Let's reNvision. Look at the way we set goals - or make New Year's Resolutions. We've been taught how to do it, or so we thought. But why aren't we more successful? Why are we so stressed out? Why don't more goals and resolutions work? Because we're using old lessons from a slower era. Let's replace three worn-out adages with ones that work better in today's changing world. One, you've herd this a hundred times: "Your goals should be precise, measurable, in writing with a due date." But you don't always have time to do all that. And when you do, you set yourself up for failure if you don't achieve the specified outcome. In other cases, you're unsure exactly what you want. Everything is in a state of flux. You're better off to know what you value, and prepare for a variety of outcomes. It's better to be aware and prepare, but set flexible goals. Two, what about all those strategies? "Know your destination, and map out your journey to get there." This works if you're going to a place, like Kansas City. But the future isn't a place. It's a time, and it's in motion. Your goals are moving targets. No wonder it's stressful! Traditional goal setting rarely allows for the fluidity of the future. Besides, life is about living, not where you end up. Try thinking that your destination matters less than the quality of your journey. Three, there is the power of your focus: Keep your eye on the goal." This works if you play basketball. But in life, when you focus on the goal you are filtering out other - possibly more important - input. There are opportunities swirling all around you in the turbulence of today's world, but you have to look for them to see them and take advantage of them. It's better to stay current on basic skills and keep your eyes open for opportunities. You're flying by the seat of your pants, through the winds of change. Create your goals with that in mind, and you'll have a more productive and less stressful result. Happy New Year.
